Identifying The ‘Occasional’ Killer

Not every murderer develops an identifiable pattern of behavior. Some are closeted killers who are waiting for the perfect opportunity to release their creature.

Could you identify a murderer from a distance? If you met one face-to-face, or up close in the bedroom, would you know what one would look like?

Occasional or sleeper killers are a different kind of criminal. They are those who kill once and never kill again. Their pattern of misbehavior never forms, so authorities are unable to find perpetrators. What they do appears to be a random act. It’s a wonderful anomaly to have — if you’re a killer.

In a perfect world, we shouldn’t need to look over our shoulders. Rainbows and peaches should surround us. In my world, the sleeper killer wakes to commit an horrific crime. And many murderers of this type won’t spend a single day in jail. They hide in plain sight. Most lead very ordinary lives.

A sleeper killer isn’t the shadowy figure we’d expect them to be. They’re not trained assassins. They don’t wear dark coats and aren’t socially awkward. They don’t have bad teeth, a creepy eye-twitch and a stutter. They go where you and I go, behaving normally when they do it. They make love like you. They look like you. Not knowing who they are is enough to make us shudder.

A sleeper killer lives closer to you than you think.

While you’re figuring out who that may be, stop and take a look in a mirror. The person you see in it has the potential to become one too. If the conditions are good and the right amount of pressure is placed upon you at the right time, you could snap and release a killer beast. I know, I’ve had that kind of pressured placed upon me. I’ve looked inside mirrors and seen the animal staring back.

No one knows about the sleeper killer inside me — except one special victim.

“Forman’s writing style is artful, with the protagonist Mitchell’s warped thought processes masterfully exposed. The author has a powerful and vivid command of language and his word pictures are stark and disturbingly real.”
