Remaining Dark on The White Web

Not everyone who browses the Internet wants to be known on the Internet. How can we stalk our victims, ummm, I mean, do research on people, and not leave a trail as we go about our business?

Staying hidden on the internet takes more than inventing an alias, browsing incognito and using someone else’s face for a profile pic. Technology leaves digital footprints. The moment we log on to the ‘net and start our e-devices, we’ve already started the process. We’re exposed and there are few ways to hide them — shows our true identity.

Some of us don’t want that to happen. We want to surf the ‘net without telling everyone who we are, where we’re going or where we’ve been. Google hates people like me. It wants to track my every online activity and advertise to me. It says that it’s a way to customise and improve my online experience. Nice. I don’t want it. My online experience will be improved by staying the hell away from me.

Here are my basic tips for staying dark on the worldwide web:

  • Turn off photo GEO-location.
  • Don’t use cloud services.
  • Don’t sign in to or up for anything.
  • Don’t use Google anything.
  • Use a private browser that doesn’t require sign-ins.
  • Use an incognito browser that blocks advertisements and pop-ups.
  • Buy and use a second, older phone, and SIM card (for calls-only).
  • Switch off GPS.

I find my victims using these and many other techniques not listed here. I stay hidden from the authorities by stopping those all-important traceable footprints being left on the ‘net. But if you’re a garden-variety type of predator, what I’ve listed above will do the trick. You’ll stay in the dark zone most of the time. Not even your mother would recognise you if she bumped into you in cyberspace.

Ironically, these are the same techniques that would protect innocents from me — if they chose to use them, of course. Fortunately, they don’t. They stay fixated on the shiny things in this world and live inside fairy tales when they do it. It makes them vulnerable and distracted. For me, it’s like taking candy from a baby.
